Where to file

Unlike Los Angeles, Orange County concentrates family law in one location:

  • Lamoreaux Justice Center 341 The City Drive South, Orange 92868. Orange County's family law courthouse for all dissolutions, custody, and support cases countywide. Family Law

You file at Lamoreaux regardless of which OC city you live in, as long as you meet the three-month county residency requirement. The single-courthouse model means more consistency in procedure but also more concentration of judges and resources.

Filing fees

Filing fees match the statewide rate — approximately $435 to $450 for the petition or response. Orange County uses the standard FW-001 fee waiver process for low-income filers.

Self-Help

The Orange County Self-Help Center at Lamoreaux is widely considered one of the most useful in California. They offer:

  • Walk-in clinics for forms and procedure questions.
  • Workshops on specific topics (default judgments, custody, support modifications) — typically free, several times per month.
  • An online self-help portal with OC-specific instructions.
  • The Family Law Facilitator's office, which specifically handles support and parentage cases.

Local rules and practice

  • Direct calendar courtrooms. Like LA, Orange County uses a direct calendar system — your case is assigned to a judge at filing and stays with that judge.
  • Mandatory mediation. Orange County requires Family Court Services mediation before contested custody hearings. OC mediations are confidential — the mediator does not make a recommendation to the court (this differs from LA).
  • Case management orders. OC issues automatic case management orders setting deadlines for disclosures, mediation, and the first status conference.
  • E-filing. Orange County requires e-filing for represented parties and accepts it from self-represented parties.

Cost of representation

Orange County family law rates run $300 to $600+ per hour, with concentrations of firms in Newport Beach, Irvine, and Santa Ana. Newport-based firms tend to run on the higher end.

For low-income parties, the Legal Aid Society of Orange County offers some family law assistance, though their family law capacity is limited.
